Cognos PowerPlay® Tops $ Billion in Revenue-to-Date;
Cited as Leading OLAP Solution

— Annual user survey finds Cognos PowerPlay commands top user loyalty —

BURLINGTON, MA, June 8, 2004— Cognos (NASDAQ: COGN; TSX; CSN) the world leader in EBI and corporate performance management solutions, today announced Cognos PowerPlay® has topped the $ billion revenue mark since its introduction in 1992. According to findings in The OLAP Survey 3 report, Cognos PowerPlay is the leading OLAP solution in a sample of more than a thousand sites. In related news, Cognos today introduced Cognos PowerPlay 7.3 (See Release: Cognos Extends Industry-Leading Enterprise Business Intelligence Series with Powerful New OLAP Capabilities, June 8, 2004) which provides additional ease-of-use and mission- critical performance features.

A recent Forrester Research1 report noted that OLAP has evolved into a vital and irreplaceable component of BI applications. The report adds that OLAP's transformation represents a corporate shift away from business operations and the related data transactions that are generated by enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), and financial systems. Instead, firms today focus on business imperatives and the requisite information analysis inherent within performance measurements. Any issue worth human contemplation is multidimensional by its very nature, and OLAP reveals these dimensional relationships within data, for example, time, geography, and product.

"With Cognos PowerPlay, users can deploy to thousands of users from any OLAP architecture, providing one of the most flexible deployment architectures available on the market today," Dave Laverty, senior vice president, global marketing, Cognos. "And it's clear that Cognos PowerPlay commands fierce loyalty from its users. Cognos is extremely proud of today's news, both in revenue results to date, recent findings, and the loyalty we command in our global customer base."

As the proven leader in OLAP and multidimensional analysis software, global companies such as Deltek, the leading provider of enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions for project-based businesses and professional services firms, and AAA Travel, one of the major business lines of AAA, have effectively deployed Cognos PowerPlay to analyze huge volumes of data with sub-second response. Customers have come to rely on Cognos PowerPlay to perform multidimensional analysis, create reports, and share these reports enterprise-wide to make better decisions. Cognos offers the fastest and easiest deployment for customers providing a dramatic reduction in total cost of ownership. With the OLAP market valued at approximately $3.5 billion within the broader BI market, Cognos continues to lead the industry according to leading analysts such as Gartner, META Group, and IDC.

Since it began nearly a century ago, AAA and its Canadian affiliate, CAA, have grown into North America's largest motoring and leisure travel organization. To stay on top in an increasingly competitive industry, AAA Travel, one of the association's major business lines, has deployed an extranet business intelligence solution from Cognos to consolidate, analyze, and report on critical business data collected from more than 1,000 retail travel locations throughout the United States and Canada.

AAA Travel is using Cognos PowerPlay to give its users an easy way to tap into critical data from the company's many data sources. "Cognos PowerPlay is the cornerstone of our BI infrastructure," said Glen Mac Donell, Manager, Data Management and Analysis, AAA National Office. "We've been a Cognos customer for a very long time and I really don't know how we could do our jobs without it. The best part about Cognos is its constant innovation, we are more excited than ever about the future."

In the recently released OLAP 3 survey by analyst Nigel Pendse (http://www.survey.com/olap), Cognos was cited as the only OLAP solution to be in the top two in all of Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, and Teradata database environments. The survey also indicated Cognos PowerPlay users had some of the highest future buying intentions, and that Cognos PowerPlay ranked substantially higher than its competitors in overall user loyalty. Among the general-purpose OLAP tools, Cognos PowerPlay has higher overall usage rates than other BI companies as well.
